Clear about cost.

A plain-English guide to what things cost in Japan, how insurance works, and where the free consultation fits in.

Dental costs in Japan can be confusing if you’re used to another system — so here’s the short version, in plain English. Many everyday treatments are covered by Japan’s public health insurance, where you typically pay around 30% of the cost. Some treatments — implants, most orthodontics, whitening and other cosmetic work — are private, and paid in full. Your first consultation with us is free either way.

Insured vs. private — what it means

Insured treatments are covered by Japan’s public health insurance; if you’re enrolled, you generally pay about 30% and insurance covers the rest. Bring your insurance card.

Private treatments aren’t covered by insurance and are paid in full — but they often allow materials and methods (like natural-looking ceramics or invisible aligners) that the insured route doesn’t. We’ll always give you a clear, itemised quote first.

The medical-expense deduction

If your household’s medical and dental costs in a year exceed a set threshold, you may be able to claim a deduction on your Japanese income-tax return. Keep your receipts — we’re happy to provide the documentation you need.
